Electrified: 100 years of Bever – Scuol-Tarasp
The Rhaetian Railway is celebrating a major milestone. On the weekend of 29th and 30th June 2013 the whole of the Engadin will celebrate the centenary of the section between Bever and Scuol-Tarasp with a bright mixture of nature, culture, language and technology. With good reason as a ground-breaking test operation was carried out on the Engadin Line from July 1913: the RhB „electrical revolution“.
RhB has connected Bever in Upper Engadin with Scuol-Tarasp in Lower Engadin since 1st July 1913. The 49 kilometre Engadin Line made a direct connection to the Canton capital Chur possible for the fi rst time via the Albula Line. This was not, however, the only fi rst on the section. RhB gained initial experience with electric trains on this line in the context of the electrifi cation of the whole railway network. The civil and mechanical engineers found it a big challenge to overcome the somewhat difficult climatic conditions.
Goodbye to the steam age
The electric train operation on the test section between Bever and Scuol-Tarasp initially had few imitators in Switzerland. The First World War brought about a radical change. The growing need for coal and the inflationary spiral threatened the existence of many rail companies. The electric train operation did not just prove to be an alternative at this time but indeed a better solution. The high price of coal, environmental
concerns, smoke gas in the tunnels and costly, labour-intensive driving sent the steam locomotive into the sidings. In addition regional hydroelectric plants in Graubünden were able to produce the necessary current. The positive experiences with the test operation between Bever and Scuol-Tarasp led to an unstoppable triumphant procession of electric railcars at RhB. In 1918 the administrative board decided to gradually electrify all RhB lines.
